Lewis and Harris Auction Mart - Sales Report

Christmas Sale of Sheep & Cattle - Thursday 10th December 2009

The Auction Mart held its annual Christmas Sale in conjunction with Dingwall & Highland Auction Marts on Thusday 10th December. The bouyant prices paid earlier in the season were maintained for cattle and sheep.

The prime cattle champion judged by Mr R Smith, Francis Street, was a 565kg Charolais cross heifer from No. 1 Gress, Back, Stornoway, realising 300p per kg and £1695 gross to W.J. Macdonald, Butchers, Francis Street, Stornoway.

The reserve award went to a 600kg Charolais cross bullock also from No. 1 Gress, which realised 250p per kg and £1500 also to W. J. Macdonald.

The champion award for prime sheep, judged by Mr D. Macdonald, Corriebheinn Farm, Portree, was 45.5kg Cheviots from C. Macleod, Crobeag, Steinish, which realised 219.8p per kg and £100 gross, with reserve going to 44kg Beltex crosses from 9 Eordale, Ness, realising 181.8p per kg and £80 gross.

CATTLE

Total Sold: 34 cattle

Prime Bullocks (2) averaged 202.6p and sold to 250p per kg and £1500 gross for the
reserve champion, a 600kg Charolais cross from 1 Gress, Back.

Prime Heifers (4) averaged 234.7p and sold to 300p per kg and £1695 gross for the
champion, a Charolais cross from No. 1 Gress.

Breeding Cattle (8) sold to £700 gross for an in-calf Hereford from 2 Arivruach, Balallan.

Store Bullocks (5) averaged 189.1p and sold to 248.3p per kg and £710 gross for a 286kg
Charolais cross from 12 Lionel, Port of Ness.

Store Heifers (13) averaged 179.2p and sold to 265.2p per kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross
from 5 Mangersta, Uig, and £960 gross for a Limousin cross from 6 Haclete, Bernera.

Total Sold: 435 sheep of all classes

Prime lambs (40) averaged 149p and sold to 219.8p per kg and £100 gross for the
champions, a pair of 45.5kg Cheviots from Crobeag.


Store lambs (189) sold to £72 gross for Cheviots from Crobeag.

Feeding sheep (206) sold to £47 gross for Cheviot ewes from 13 Cross Skigersta Road,
Ness.
