Lewis and Harris Auction Mart held the second sale of the 2024 season on Wednesday 4th September. The sale, held in conjunction with our partners at Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., saw the auction of a total of 4197 store lambs and sheep of all categories. It was a very busy sale and this is total is only 30 less than the record one-day sale set at the September sale last year.
There was an excellent show of very good quality lambs and and the positive prices seen at the first sale of the season continued strongly through this sale too. Average lamb prices on the day were up £11.79 or +23.4% on the equivalent sale in September last year.
Lamb prices topped out at £130 and gimmers at £144. Ewes achieved a top price of £105 and other stock reached a maximum of £126.
This sale was tremendously supported by our community with large numbers staying throughout the sale to support fellow producers. Again at this sale, Directors were heartened by the ever-growing number of young producers and supporters of the mart that were present on the day.
On such a busy sale day, the Directors would like to thank all producers for arriving early, being organised and helping to ensure the sale ran smoothly. This is essential when so many stock pass through the ring on a single day.
Lambs (3,155) averaged £62.14 and sold to £130 for a cheviot from 53 Balallan, Lochs Ewes (905) sold to £105 for a cheviot from 16 Gress, Back Gimmers (66) sold to £144 for a pen of cheviots from Ardview, Maraig Cast Rams & Feeding Sheep (71) sold to £126 for a cheviot from Ladysmith Cottage, Westend
